  • Copyrights - Introduction

Copyrights are a form of intellectual property that cover original works of authorship. Copyrightable material may include literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture. A copyright vests as soon as the artistic expression is fixed into a tangible medium. Copyright protection is available for both published and unpublished works. A copyright owner has the exclusive right to do and to authorize others to do the following:

    (a) Reproduce or copy the work

    (b) Prepare derivative works based on original or earlier works

    (c) Sell or transfer ownership of the work to the public by rental, lease or lending

    (d) Perform literary, musical, dramatic, and choreographic works, pantomimes, and motion pictures and other audiovisual works publicly,

    (e) Display publicly literary, musical, dramatic, and choreographic works, pantomimes, and pictorial, graphic, or sculptural works, including the individual images of a motion picture or other audiovisual works

    (f) Perform sound recordings publicly by means of a digital audio transmission
